Erling Haaland Biography:
Erling Braut Haaland is a Norwegian professional footballer known for his speed, power, positioning and finishing skills. As of 2023, he plays as a striker for Manchester City and the Norway national team. He holds notable records, including the most goals scored by a player in a Premier League season (36 goals) and the fastest person to score two, three and four hat-tricks.
Haaland was born on 21 July 2000 in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He has a younger sister, an older sister and an older brother. At the time, he was an energetic child who played football with his friends. In addition to football, he was also active in other sports, including track and field, golf and handball.
His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, was also a technical striker who played for Nottingham Forest, Leeds and Manchester City between 1993 and 2003. His father played a significant role in Haaland’s footballing life, assisting him as a coach from the age of 6 to 15, guiding him in making important decisions about his son’s future. After his father’s career ended due to injury, the family returned to their hometown of Bryn, Norway, where Erling began his footballing journey.
Erling Haaland began his career at the academy of his hometown club, Bryn, at the age of five. There, he showed his potential early on, playing competitively a year ahead of his age group. He made his debut for Bryn’s first team three months before his 16th birthday, and made 16 appearances for the club during the 2016 season.
Despite moving to Norway at a young age, Haaland still has a fondness for the city he was born in – Leeds, England. In an interview, Haaland admitted that he would like to one day play for Leeds United in the Premier League.
“I want to be the best I can be,” Haaland said. “The dream is to win the Premier League with Leeds. Besides that, the goal is to become a better player than my father.” “Halland represents Norway and has played for them at various levels. He was part of the Norway under-17 team that won the 2016 Sirenka Cup. He made his senior debut for Norway on 5 September 2019 in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Malta. He scored his first senior goal for Norway in a 2–1 loss to Austria in the 2020–21 Nations League B on 4 September 2020. Erling Haaland is a Norwegian-born professional footballer who signed for Molde FK in February 2017 under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He made impressive progress with the club, scoring 12 goals in his second season. In January 2019, he moved to Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga. He Salzburg made a name for themselves, most notably when they scored nine goals in one game at the 2019 U-20 World Cup.
In December 2019, Haaland moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he continued to impress and win titles. In the summer of 2022, he moved to Manchester City for a fee of €60 million (£51.2 million), winning the Premier League in his debut campaign and being named Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.

Erling Haaland’s clubs
Brein and Molde:
Haaland joined the academy of his hometown club Brein when he was just five years old. He enjoyed a steady rise through the youth ranks of Brein and earned his first chance in the club’s first team when he was just 15 – after his youth team boss took over first-team duties.
Erling was initially deployed as a winger but gradually began to gain more opportunities in his main role as a centre-forward.
Brein coach Alf-Ingo Berntsen was immediately impressed by what he saw of Haaland, despite his young age.
“I first saw Erling when he was five years old, joining an indoor training session with a group of players a year older,” explains Berntsen. “His first two touches led to goals. He was very, very good from the first moment, even though he had never played for the club before.
He started playing in his own year group, but because he was so much better than the others, we immediately promoted him to the under-6s. In 2005, the club built an indoor grass football pitch that was always open at the weekends. Erling and about 20 other people would always meet there on the weekends and play for hours.
He was a little smaller than his opponents because he was a year younger. But even though his opponents were significantly taller, he kept scoring. When he was 11 or 12, we knew he would go far. We already knew he had what it takes to be a youth international.”
Haaland joined Norwegian side Molde in February 2017 after a total of 16 senior appearances for the club.
Haaland made his debut for Molde on 26 April 2017 in a Norwegian Cup match against Velda TI, scoring in a 3–2 win.
He scored his first league goal for Molde on 1 June 2017 against Sarpsborg 08 after coming on as a substitute. He scored a total of 14 league goals in 39 appearances for Molde before moving to Red Bull Salzburg.
Red Bull Salzburg:
Molde was not impressed by Haaland’s impressive performances and on 1 January 2019, his agreement to sign with Austrian side RB Salzburg was completed.
The deal had been agreed a few months earlier, with RB Salzburg announcing the transfer on 19 August 2018, with Haaland agreeing to a five-year contract. Leeds United were also said to have made an offer for Haaland before the move to RB Salzburg was finalised.
Haaland made his debut for RB Salzburg on 17 February 2019, scoring his first goal for the Austrian club in a 2–1 win in the Austrian Bundesliga against LASK on 12 May.
He helped Salzburg win the Austrian Bundesliga in the 2018-19 season.
His former teammate at Red Bull Salzburg, Maximilian Wuber, had nothing but good things to say about Haaland when recalling their time together at the Austrian club.
“He’s an absolute professional,” Wuber said.
In the 2019-20 season, Haaland began to find his form in front of goal for Salzburg, scoring 28 goals in 22 games in all competitions for the Austrian side. This included an impressive return of 8 goals in 6 games in the Champions League.
His prolific form in front of goal began to attract new fans from across Europe, and Haaland was on the move again in January 2020.
Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund confirmed the signing of Haaland from RB Salzburg on 29 December 2019, with the Norwegian striker signing an initial four-and-a-half-year contract with the German club.
He made his debut for Dortmund, away at Augsburg on 18 January 2020, scoring an incredible hat-trick to help his team to a thrilling 5–3 victory.
Haaland quickly established himself as a regular in the first team at Dortmund, and his prolific form in front of goal continued.
He scored a total of 13 goals and provided two assists in 15 Bundesliga games during his first half-season with the German club.
The Norway international continued his excellent form in front of goal in the 2020–21 season, with Haaland scoring 27 goals and providing six assists in 28 Bundesliga games. He also scored 10 goals and provided two assists in eight Champions League games.
Haaland scored three goals in four games to help Dortmund win the DFB-Pokal title in the 2020–21 season.
He eventually finished as the Champions League’s top scorer for the 2020–21 season and was also named Bundesliga Player of the Season after his electric displays in front of goal.
Haaland has previously revealed that he looks up to Real Madrid and Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo as one of his footballing heroes, as well as former Swansea City star Michy.
Haaland said in 2020: “I have a lot of [idols] and Michy is one of them. He was amazing at Swansea. I also love Cristiano Ronaldo and what he has done in the last 10 years. I love watching football, especially strikers because I am a striker.”
Manchester City:
On 13 June 2022, Manchester City officially completed the signing of Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, with the striker signing a five-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2027.
Haaland said after completing his move: “It’s a proud day for me and my family.” I’ve always watched City and I’ve loved it in recent seasons. You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is great for a player like me.
There are so many world-class players in this team and Pep is one of the best coaches of all time, so I believe I’m in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.
I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I’m sure I can do that here. It’s a great move for me and I can’t wait for pre-season to start.”
